What is Neurophysiology?
Neurophysiology involves the assessment of how the nervous system functions, including the brain, nerves, muscles, and spinal cord.
These investigations help neurologists diagnose and monitor a range of neurological conditions by measuring electrical activity within the nervous system.
Testing is performed by experienced clinicians using specialised equipment, with results reviewed and interpreted by your neurologist.

Types of Neurophysiology Testing
Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
Nerve conduction studies measure how electrical signals travel through nerves.
This testing is commonly used to investigate:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Peripheral nerve disorders
- Nerve compression
- Tingling, numbness, or weakness
Electromyography (EMG)
EMG testing assesses the electrical activity of muscles and can help investigate conditions affecting muscles and nerves.
This test may assist in diagnosing:
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Radiculopathy
- Myopathy
- Nerve injuries
- Motor neuron disorders
Electroencephalography (EEG)
EEG testing records electrical activity within the brain using small recording leads placed on the scalp.
EEG may be recommended for:
- Epilepsy and seizures
- Episodes of altered awareness
- Unexplained blackout events
- Other neurological conditions affecting brain activity

What to Expect During Testing
Testing appointments vary depending on the investigation being performed.
Your clinician will explain the procedure and answer any questions before testing begins.
Most investigations are performed in the outpatient clinic and patients are able to return home afterwards.
Some tests may involve:
- Small electrical impulses
- Recording electrodes attached to the skin
- Fine needle examination of muscles during EMG testing
While some parts of testing may feel uncomfortable, procedures are generally well tolerated.

Yes. Depending on the treatment type and PBS eligibility, appointments and procedures may involve out-of-pocket expenses.
Some parts of testing may feel uncomfortable, particularly EMG or nerve conduction studies, however procedures are generally well tolerated.
Yes. A valid referral from a doctor or specialist is required.
Northwest Neurology provides specialist consultations for adult patients only. Children are not seen in consultation at our practice, neurophysiology testing, such as EEG, is available to patients of all ages with a valid referral.
Please bring your referral, medication list, Medicare card, and any relevant scans or reports.
Results are reviewed by the neurologist and a report is sent to your referring doctor.
